A to Z

K is for Kings and Queens

A to Z Challenge: K

~ Kings and Queens by Thirty Seconds to Mars

I was first introduced to this song when I saw the trailers for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (2010). The song and beautiful animation drew me to the theater… At least the song doesn’t suck. The movie was pretty to look at. That’s about all it had going for it.

J is for Justice League

A to Z Challenge: J

J is for Justice League… the animated series formerly aired on Cartoon Network from 2001 to 2006. I loved that series. Anyone who is a comic fan, especially DC, should give it a looksie. It continued with the characters from Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series. I mention that because some of the later series aired on Cartoon Network don’t share a continuity though they share characters… It’s a comics DC/Marvel thing. Just smile and nod.

Anywho, I really loved that series and was sad to see it go. I loved the fact that it crossed over Static Shock and Batman Beyond. Pretty much every DC property at that time was sharing a continuity and it was fun to have guest stars.

For this post I’m going to talk about my fav episodes:
(in the order they aired)

#1 – Legends (Episodes 18 & 19)
My favorite line from this episode, “You’re a credit to your people, son.” O.O!! The first time I heard that line, I just sat there. They went there. After the shock wore off, I just had to laugh. I loved the camp and the nod to the old superheroes before everyone went gritty and real.

#2 – The Savage Time (Episodes 24, 25 & 26)
Our first introduction to the Vandal Savage character (Ra’s a Ghul can’t always be the megalomaniac bad guy). I really love this character just because of his origins and the fact that he’s the DC universe of Marvel’s Apocalypse. He isn’t malevolent. He just is.

#3 – Tabula Rasa (Episodes 29 & 30)
Amazo!! Enough said.

#4 – Only a Dream (Episodes 31 & 32)
Because this is a team series, it’s hard to really focus on individual characters. It’s especially hard to focus on the one lone member without powers. This was Batman’s time to shine. I loved how he dealt with the situation. And going back and watching it again, my writer self appreciated the foreshadowing about Shiera.

#5 – Maid of Honor (Episodes 33 & 34)
Vandal Savage is back! And you get to see Wonder Woman being girly… sort of.

#6 – A Better World (Episodes 37 & 38)
I think this has to be my second favorite episode out of the entire series. I was over the moon when DCU decided to revisit the storyline as a feature length film in Crisis on Two Earths. It’s not exactly the same but I adore both versions of this story. Evil Justice League. What’s not to love?

#7 – Hereafter (Episodes 45 & 46)
The Death of Superman. You knew they had to do it. I would say more than this about why I loved these episodes, but for anyone who hasn’t seen the series and might decide to rectify that later, I don’t want to ruin the toy surprise.

#8 – Wild Cards (Episodes 47 & 48)
There is SOOOO much to love about this episode. Let me count the ways.

  • Joker guest appearance
  • Royal Flush gang
  • Ace rocks!
  • The voice actors from Teen Titans voiced the Royal Flush Gang

That last one had me squeeing major when I realized. I love it. So much to geekgasm in this episode. Third favorite for sure.

#9 – Kids’ Stuff (JLU Episode #3)
The Justice League core members as little kids. Enough said.

#10 – The Return (JLU Episode #8)
Amazo is back!

#11 – Once and Future Thing (JLU Episodes #12 & 13)
Time travel is always a win in my book. As well, this is the episode that crossed over Batman Beyond. Instant win.

#12 – Divided We Fall (JLU Episode #25)
This is the episode where Flash finally gets to shine and the viewing audience gets a hint as to his true power.

#13 – Epilogue (JLU Episode #26)
Favorite, favorite, favorite, number one episode out of them all. I love this absolutely because it gave the Batman Beyond series a sense of closure. Not enough obviously. I still wish it had kept going but I was happy for this nugget.

#14 – The Great Brain Robbery (JLU Episode #34)
This is another one of those geekgasm episodes. The fact that Flash is voiced by Michael Rosenbaum, the actor who played Lex Luther in Smallville and has that scene where Lex (whose mind is in Flash’s body) takes off his mask and then says, “I have no clue who this is.” Teehee. It’s a you-had-to-be-there moment. Other than that, it’s Batman’s uber computer getting used against the JL… again.

Those are all my favorites. I enjoyed the entire series and am working my way back through it again for nostalgia’s sake before I go binge The Batman. I’ve only ever seen a few episodes of that. It’s time I catch up on DC animated.

I is for Ice Cream

A to Z Challenge: I

I is for Ice Cream. When I was a kid living in Okinawa, Japan (my dad is former Air Force), there was an ice cream shop my dad would always took my brothers and me. Every time he asked which flavor I wanted I would always say lime. I could never figure out why he kept asking since I only ever wanted lime. Maybe he thought I would change my mind one day and pick a new flavor.

I’m the type of person who finds something she likes and pretty much sticks with it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Well, years passed and I graduated from lime to butter pecan. I adore butter pecan ice cream. I also love IHOP’s butter pecan syrup, but that’s a different topic.

Right now, as I write this post, I’m eating butter pecan with maraschino cherries — not just one cherry… SEVERAL. I love maraschino cherries. But I’ll get to that in a second. So butter pecan. That’s me. If no butter pecan, then vanilla will do or I’ll just pass.

One day I was in the grocery store and saw Haagen-Dazs had little tiny taster-like servings of ice cream. I mean tiny. One scoop type of tiny. 99 cents each. I figured what the hell. I’ll try something new and picked up rum raisin. I like raisins. I like rum. Sure.

LOVE rum raisin. Love. Love. Love. Where has this been all my life? So of course, the second I discover I like it, the grocery store stops carrying it. Story of my life. I’m sure I could request it but they probably stopped carrying it because no one was buying… except for me. πŸ˜›

So back to butter pecan. Not a bad thing but I miss the rum raisin. Now you might be wondering how I went from plain butter pecan to butter pecan and maraschino cherries. That’s simple. The hubby bought Ole Smokey Cherry Moonshine. There are actual maraschino cherries sitting in 100 proof liquor. Sounds good, right?

We had a jar. We had ice cream. Instant win. Okay so fun fact about soaking really sweet fruit in alcohol — the sweet infuses into the liquid, leaving nothing in the fruit except alcohol. I found this out the hard way.

So here’s the deal — I plop a few cherries into some butter pecan ice cream. I did a mix of Ole Smokey cherries and regular maraschinos. The alcohol freezes in the cherries. I can’t tell the Ole Smokey’s from the regulars, so now I have a 100 proof landmines in my ice cream. I ate it but that was rough. I mean really rough. Ole Smokey White Lightning is nothing to play with.

Suffice to say I decided to skip the landmines for the next bowl. I’m pretty much addicted to butter pecan with maraschino cherries now.

In later news, on the topic of Ole Smokey, all the other flavors are fantastic. The apple pie especially. If you have a liquor store in your area that carries it, I highly recommend it. Very good. Sweet too.

H is for Handicrafts

A to Z Challgenge: H

H is for Handicrafts. From a young age, my mother taught my brothers and me never to be bored. Bored meant she would find us something to do. You know moms — any activity they find to keep you busy is nothing you want to do. Fast forward a few years and the lessons learned from childhood are still with me. I don’t like being bored. In fact, I always have something to do. I might not want to do it, but I do have something that needs to be (or could be) done.

But not just anything, mind you. The thing taking up my time has to have some purpose besides just being there, has to require some amount of skill to engage me. I love Legos and Nanoblocks, but those things get expensive. Recently I discovered Metal Earth kits — models of ships, buildings and such made of paper thin, laser cut metal. I’ve already put together Big Ben. My hubby is waiting for me to do Space Shuttle Atlantis so he can put it on his desk.

I started fiddling with chain mail weaving a few years ago and make random things (bracelets, necklaces, key chains) when the mood strikes me. I have an inkle loom I haven’t used in years that I need to get back to. I bought it because my middle school teacher got me interested in weaving. I can’t knit or crochet to save my life (it’s either too loose or too tight and I tend to lose count of my stitches) but I love weaving — thread and metal.

Since moving to Hawaii, I’ve picked up a few more crafts. Back in Feb 2012, I blogged about the re-creation hematite bracelet I made. I also discovered kumihimo weaving, which is great for when I’m stuck in line some place. I wove a really long kumihimo braid and attached it to my keychain so I never lose my keys in my purse… though the braid sometimes gets stuck in the car door. πŸ˜›

I started and stopped 3D origami. The paper triangles I made were too small for the piece I wanted to create. Since getting the triangles ready is a little time-consuming (yes, I know that’s the point), I haven’t picked it up again. I plan to, just not right now.

Just a few days ago, I got interested in rolled paper art. It’s a wonderful way to recycle old magazines and paper and turn them into something useful. As soon as I get to the craft store to get the glue/glaze I need, I’ll be turning my junk mail into bowls, decorative mirrors, and beaded bracelets.

G is for Got Nothing…

A to Z Challenge: G

G is for Got Nothing… As in I can’t think of anything worth writing about that begins with the letter G.

I could talk about how I’m not that fond of gold and prefer silver. But that’s not enough to take up a full post. It’s not that I hate gold. My wedding ring is gold. I prefer rose gold, if I have to wear gold but that’s expensive. As it is, I really prefer silver. Stainless steel jewelry is gaining popularity. Tungsten Carbide too.

There’s also Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor the anime from 1985 and it’s 1990’s reboot. I really loved this series except for one thing… it never ended. The guyver armor gets to the point where it’s in god mode and about to kick much butt and then — end. Very disappointing. Maybe the manga finished the storyline. I’ll have to check one day.

Speaking of things that just up and end, I still want to kick Disney for not finishing Gargoyles. That show rocked. It has a huge following still even though it’s been over for years. The comic didn’t go much past where the cartoon ended, though I’m happy the comic retconned the Goliath Chronicles. That season was so stupid. Well sort of. The very last story arc was good but the rest we could have skipped.

I’m pretty fond of Greek mythology, which is probably why I didn’t like Immortals, Clash of the Titans (2010) and Wrath of the Titans as much as others. It’s one of those situations where I probably would have liked all those movies better if I “hadn’t read the book first.” As it were. Taken on their own merits, they were okay — putting aside the clown car Titans box in Immortals. But all the stories strayed really far from the original text.

Maybe next year when I do A to Z with a theme, I’ll have a better post for G. We’ll have to wait and see.

F is for Forward

A to Z Challenge: F

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
~ Lao Tzu

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
~ Walt Disney

“Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”
~ Victor Kiam

“Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.”
~ Denis Waitley

“When a thing is done, it’s done. Don’t look back. Look forward to your next objective.”
~ George C. Marshall

“I don’t like looking back. I’m always constantly looking forward. I’m not the one to sort of sit and cry over spilt milk. I’m too busy looking for the next cow.”
~ Gordon Ramsay

“Press forward. Do not stop, do not linger in your journey, but strive for the mark set before you.”
~ George Whitefield

There are so many quotes and they all basically say the same thing…

Behind me is where I came from. I made mistakes and learned those lessons. Dwelling on them does nothing but depress me and stall my momentum. I can’t change the past and wouldn’t even if I could. Forward is the way I’m facing and forward is where I’m going until I reach my goal.

E is for Eclectic

A to Z Challenge: E

E is for Eclectic… which pretty much describes me and the things I like. I’m known for stumping suggestion algorithms — both Blockbuster (are they even still around) and Netflix have given up. I think Hulu is almost there too.

I don’t mean to be difficult but many things appeal to me and not all those things mesh.

– Reincarnation – Ghost in the Shell Soundtrack

And that’s just this month. Ever so often, I put all my play counts back to zero and start the most played list all over again. I just did it recently. The most played song on this list has only been played 35 times. Before my last clean slate, the most played song (title I can’t remember) had been played well over 150 times.

When I do it again, about 5 (maybe 6) of the above songs will remain. The rest will be something different. With 3900+ songs in my playlist, my most played changes a LOT. It all depends on my mood when I’m listening to music and what new songs I’ve downloaded that need to be listened to at least ten times in a row. πŸ˜›

D is for Dragons

A to Z Challenge: D

In case it wasn’t obvious by my topics over the last few days, my contributions for the A to Z Challenge are completely random. And today’s randomness is DRAGONS!

I love dragons. Love. Love. Love. I will watch any movie so long as it has dragons. Same with TV shows though I’m holding off on Game of Thrones. I’ll probably be binging seasons one and two very soon though. I don’t have cable so it’s not like I can watch season three any time soon. I have to wait for DVD.

But back to the topic at hand. I love dragons. I can spend hours staring at dragon pictures. Any artist who draws beautiful dragons has a fan for life in me — Ciruelo, Anne Stokes, Nene Thomas (I got hooked on her back when I used to play Magic the Gathering), and Carolina Mylius come to mind first.

– Flight of Dragons
– Reign of Fire
– Dragonheart I and II
– Dragonslayer
– D-War (sucked)
– Shrek (all of them but I regret seeing the last two)
– The Neverending Story I and II
– Spirited Away (anime)
– Sleeping Beauty (Maleficent rules!)
– Sword in the Stone (“Did I say PURPLE dragons? Did I?!”)
– Eragon
– Beowulf (2007)
– How to Train Your Dragon (LOVE!!)
– Dragons: Riders of Berk (series spin-off of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’)
– The Hobbit (though I would have watched this even without the dragon)

Seen them all multiple times (except D-War because that really, REALLY sucked and once was 2hrs of my life I’ll never get back) and loved every second. I have books featuring dragons that I need to finish and get published. I have several dragon romances in my TBR pile because the blurb said dragons — that’s pretty much all I needed to buy the book. Yes, I’m that easy.

The only reason I don’t have dragon posters plastered on the walls of my office is because my posters are in storage (necessity of a military move) and I’m not allowed to buy more (*pout*). But I have all my Todd MacFarlane dragons (I own the six in the series that I really liked) adorning my bookshelf.

I get weepy every time I think about missing Dragon*Con (*sniffle*) and I wish they really existed. Once I figure out that whole dimension hopping thing, I’m finding a reality where they do exist and leaving this one behind. πŸ˜›

C is for Community

A to Z Challenge: C

C is for Community… the authors’ community, that is. I am very happy, fortunate, and blessed to be part of several online groups filled with wise authors generous in their knowledge. From the beginning of my career until now and into the future, there is never a time my questions go unanswered. And, if I have an answer, I’m always happy to share it.

Authors are a talkative bunch — usually behind closed doors (or closed groups) so we don’t get ourselves in trouble. Get a few Erotic Romance authors together and the conversation will quickly migrate to sex in all its variations and the best (or worst) words to use when describing it all.

Until I went to my first Romance convention, I thought I truly was a black sheep — not only in my family but with the people around me. Only my close friends and hubby could join in the conversation topics my imagination would toss out without looking at me like I had lost my mind. And then I met other authors — like-minded individuals just as warped and out there as I am.

Among the authors I have met, I have made a true mental connection with Stephanie Burke. We are shaved off the same block of crazy. We can call each other up with the intention of having a five-minute conversation (twenty tops) and end up staying on the phone for 6-8 hours just talking plots and characters and scenes. Oh, we also toss in some family stuff, but it’s mostly pure fantasy worlds and character torture.

It’s a great feeling to find a community to which to belong. I’m so happy writing led me to mine.

B is for Busy

A to Z Challenge: B

I wonder how many other fellow A-to-Z’ers will use Busy for their B word. I’ve been struggling for the last few hours to figure out what I could use for B while trying to dig out from under all the stuff I need to get done… then the light bulb flipped on.

Let’s make a list shall we?

– Judging Swirl Awards: 3 books (due 07 June – haven’t started)
– Judging FF&P’s Prism Awards: 8 books (due 03 May – haven’t started)
– DRB1stChp blog: daily posts needing scheduling through 16 April (one per day and four on Sundays)
* Syndicating info to FB page and groups
* Syndicating info on Twitter
* Syndicating info on Google+
– Updating both DRB1stChp and DRBya1stChp blogs so all posts are tagged and consistent with new design since WordPress migration
– New Release promotion for Changeling Press (four separate blogs each week)
– Promotions workshops/seminars for Changeling Press authors (twice a month)
– Flash Fiction Round Up post and new theme announcement at Changeling Press (every Friday)
– Slash Sunday on Stephanie Burke’s FB timeline (missed 31 March’s ’cause I forgot)
– Guest blog at Sweet ‘n Sexy Divas on 19 April & 19 May (need to write both in April)
– Guest blog at Cup o’ Porn on 08 & 10 May (have to turn that info in April)
– Guest blog at TRS Blue 17 May (need to write in April)
– Finish Caveat Emptor spin-off novella (10-20K words) in April (deadline June but I’ll be traveling most of May and beginning of June so I need to get it done in April)
– Start and finish Halloween novella (6-10K words) with April deadline
– Write two Encounters (free reads for Changeling Press max 1500 words) to be released in April (due on 13th) & May

Just looking at that list is depressing. I do it to myself. I volunteered for it all. Add in my regular promotional efforts for my own titles and you have my definition of busy. Plus my work load is that much more pressing because in May I’ll be traveling to the mainland to attend a wedding, visit family, and attend a convention. I leave on 01 May and won’t be back in Hawaii until 10 June. Anything due in May and early June has to be accomplished in April.

Believe me, when I made my May plans I wasn’t thinking about all this stuff. I have to go research connect cards so my internet connection won’t be interrupted during my travels. I have too much going on to be without internet for too long. At least that small expense counts as business so it’ll come off my taxes.

Oh yeah… almost forgot… I also decided to be part of the A to Z Challenge. πŸ˜›

A is for Adrienne

A to Z Challenge: A

This is my first year doing the A to Z Challenge. I found out about it last year and wanted to make sure I joined in the fun this year. Though I’m struggling to figure out what to write for each letter, A come to me with no trouble.

Adrienne by D. Renee Bagby

A is for Adrienne — my debut title. Released in 2007 with Samhain Publishing, Adrienne was proof to myself that I could do it. I set that goal and met it. Once I finished, submitted, and contracted it, I realized I could put my imagination into words for others to enjoy. Not only that. I could finish.

After finishing the first title, every title after came that much easier. ‘The End’ was no longer an unattainable goal to be feared. Now ‘The End’ just means it’s time to start the next story.

I might not be where I thought I would be by year five (actually, it’s six in July) of my career but I’m still loving every minute and enjoying all the stories my imagination offers. Now if I could just get a clone and figure out a way to survive without food, water, sleep, and human interaction, I might actually be able to write them all.
