Manga Review: Beast & Feast

Beast & Feast by Akira Norikazu

Publisher: DMP June
Price: $12.95
Genre: Drama, Romance, Contemporary, Suspense, Yaoi
Themes: Yakuza, Cops, Forbidden Romance
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 1 Volume
ISBN: 978-1-56970-256-7

Note: Picture taken with my iPhone from my manga library.

Basic Premise:
Kazuha Hishunuma is a police detective. Itsuki Hyodo is a yakuza underboss. Former middle school buddies reunited after a few years apart, Hyodo is ready to start a relationship with Kazuha. A murder investigation, Hyodo’s eventual succession to the head of the family and over eager minions keep getting in the way. All the obstacles make Kazuha think the relationship will never work, but Hyodo isn’t prepared to let him go.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, groping, bondage, forced pleasure, insertion, pressed bodies, suggestive positions, penis shots

Review:
This manga was aptly named. Hyodo is a complete beast, wanting sex anywhere and everywhere and at anytime. But that’s what makes him such a loveable character. He’s got a one-track mind that’s always headed towards Kazuha, his feast, sometimes an unwilling feast.

They are such an odd couple. Kazuha is the reserved, conservative cop. Hyodo is the typical flashy, boisterous Yakuza. Plenty of people don’t want them together, they know they shouldn’t be together, but that just makes their relationship so much more fun.

This is a total re-read, keeper shelf manga for me. There’s laughs and love and intrigue as Kazuha tries to solve a crime and Hyodo tries to stay alive to inherit his rightful place.

Fans of the caring tough guy types will love Hyodo. It’s funny to see him portrayed as a lion in bed and puppy when Kazuha is scolding him. This is a manga not to be missed and Norikazu-sensei is now added to my must read manga artist list.

Manga Review: Right Here, Right Now

Right Here, Right Now by Souya Himawari

Publisher: DMP June
Price: $12.95 (print); $7.95 (ebook)
Genre: Drama, Romance, Time Travel, Yaoi
Themes: Feudal Japan
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 2 Volumes
ISBN: 978-1-56970-609-1 (Vol 1); 978-1-56970-063-1 (Vol 2)

Note: Picture taken with my iPhone from my manga library.

Basic Premise:
Mizuo Yanase has fallen back in time to Feudal Japan. Mistaken for a living Buddha, he is now the good luck charm of Takakage Koichiro Fujima’s army. On top of that, Takakage wants Mizuo as his personal page, a boy meant to share his bed. Mizuo wants to go home but he can’t deny his growing feelings for Takakage that make him want to stay.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, pressed bodies, suggestive positions

Review:
I love Time Travel Romance, so of course I love this manga. Everyone is so accepting, reverent even, of Mizuo because they think he’s a living Buddha rather than a human displaced in time. One of the things a Time Travel author must do is keep the character from being killed as a witch or demon and Himawari-sensei did a wonderful job.

Mizuo and Takakage are perfect for each other because they are opposites. Their strengths make up for the other’s weaknesses. The supporting cast is believable and makes the reader want to know what happens to them.

For a sweet action Time Travel, this is the book you want to read.

Manga Review: Yokan

Yokan by Makoto Tateno

Publisher: DMP June
Price: $12.95 (print); $7.95 (ebook)
Genre: Drama, Romance, Yaoi
Themes: Musicians, Idols, Showbiz
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 2 Volumes
ISBN: 978-1-56970-160-7 (Vol 1 – Premonition); 978-1-56970-161-4 (Vol 2 – Noise)

Note: Picture taken with my iPhone from my manga library.

Basic Premise:

YOKAN
Charon the ferryman on the River Styx. Nun, a word meaning Death. These are also the names of two bands whose lead singers are about to clash. Akira used to think of music as his own form of masturbation. He didn’t about anyone’s pleasure but his own and that took his band to the top. Then one day he heard Hiroya Sunaga singing and everything changed. Akira wants Hiroya. Akira wants Hiroya’s voice. Akira will drag Hiroya kicking and screaming back into the limelight, but Akira will have to pay the price for dragging Hiroya back into his own personal hell.

SINSEMILLA
Kazumi is straight and a playboy. He won’t give Seiji a second glance until a mysterious pill and a shared erotic dream brings Kazumi to Seiji’s door for fulfillment. When their bodies are sated, Seiji is sad to see it all end… or has it?

Sex Shown:
Rape, kissing, pressed bodies, groping, suggestive positions

Review:
This is a heavy manga, but I loved it. Tateno-sensei is one of my favorites for a reason and this manga series reaffirmed that. Akira and Hiroya are two very powerful personalities that cannot be denied. It’s hard to tell where envy and hatred ends and where love and adoration begins… for both of them and the reader. But that mixed emotion is what makes this manga so powerful.

I almost wish I could hear the music. But then I’m glad I can’t because that allows me to make up something powerful in my own imagination.

Kazumi and Seiji are a little sad because of how their relationship started. But it was that little nudge that brought them together and made Kazumi realize that he loves Seiji after all.

Of the two couples, of course I loved Akira and Hiroya. I especially loved how Akira’s bandmates just can’t deny him when he makes a request and then bats his eyes at them. They’re no match for his charms, but each of them loves Akira in their own way.

Any Tateno-sensei fan should be reading this one.

Manga Review: Intense Rain

Intense Rain by Shinri Fuwa

Publisher: DMP June
Price: $12.95
Genre: Drama, Romance, Yaoi
Themes: Students, Classmates, Player Reform, Reunions
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 1 Volume
ISBN: 978-1-56970-164-5

Note: Picture taken with my iPhone from my manga library.

Basic Premise:
INTENSE RAIN
Takaaki Baba is a player with a new target in his sights, Ryuuji Aoyama. Their relationship starts with the normal trap. Ryuuji tries to fight his attraction but Takaaki can be very persuasive. However it seems like Ryuuji is the only taking their relationship seriously.

THE KEY
Takaaki and Ryuuji are reunited after five years. There are still regrets and bitter feelings between them, but a keepsake from the past might be able to bridge all that and bring them back together.

ADULT CIRCUMSTANCES, ADULT NAIVETE
Ryuuji is still uneasy and distrustful of Takaaki. The past is hard to forget and evidence keeps piling up against Takaaki. There’s only one way left for Takaaki to prove that he’s truly changed.

BECAUSE I SAID I DEFINITELY LIKED YOU
Kei Akigawa had a one night stand with Shindou Satoshi, a man Kei fell in love with at first sight. However, Satoshi isn’t interested in love with Kei or anyone else. It’s up to Kei to convince him otherwise.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, hugging, suggestive positions, pressed bodies

Review:
I always enjoy player reformed stories because you see a person who is used to sleeping around and using people fall hard for someone only to be denied. After that denial, the player usually has to do a lot to earn the trust of the person they love so their relationship can progress. Intense Rain is no different.

Takaaki isn’t a complete jerk and Ryuuji is partially to blame. This story has a lot of grey area so the reader can’t place the blame solely on one person or the other. Sure miscommunication and assumptions of guilt make up most of this story, but it was still fun seeing Takaaki and Ryuuji struggle to be together and stay apart.

The story of Kei and Satoshi is cute, a little sad and full of stubbornness. It’s a yaoi plot I’ve seen before, but I liked this version of it.

Manga Review: Then Comes Love

Then Comes Love by Riyu Yamakami

Publisher: DMP June
Price: $12.95
Genre: Drama, Romance, Yaoi
Themes: Students, Classmates, Best Friend Love
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 1 Volume
ISBN: 978-1-56970-022-8

Note: Picture taken with my iPhone from my manga library.

Basic Premise:
Midori Hirano is in love with his best friend Takahiro Sasahara. They are polar opposites. Midori is aloof and quiet while Takahiro is boisterous and popular. Midori doesn’t know why he loves Takahiro, but he does know not having his feelings returned hurts. Midori wants to distance himself from Takahiro without losing their friendship, but Takahiro isn’t about to let that happen.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, pressed bodies, suggestive positions, penis outlines

Review:
Riyu-sensei has joined my list of must read manga artists. Her books never fail to entertain me. This one is no exception to that.

Takahiro is the big loveable idiot who just doesn’t get it. He wants Midori all to himself but doesn’t realize why he feels that way. Midori wants more than friendship but is scared to confess his feelings because he thinks Takahiro will shun him. It’s a conundrum that plays out so well in this story.

Any fan of stories featuring first love and love with a difficult partner will really enjoy this book and Riyu-sensei’s other works.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, pressed bodies, suggestive positions, invisible penis, fondling.

Review:
This manga is the continuation of THE RUMORED PAIR, the last story that appears in Just My Luck. I asked that the story go on without realizing I already owned it. 😛

The main couple Akabane and Aoyama made me laugh. Aoyama is hard to read because he is so stoic and no one knows what’s he thinking. And when he finally opens his mouth, his thoughts are so off the wall that you can only stare at him and shake your head. Poor Akabane is just swept up with Aoyama’s flow, but you can tell they’ll get along great in the future.

Takimoto and Sawano were funny because they were so awkward. My first thought while reading their story was “who does something like that?!!” You have to read it to see what I’m talking about but it’s so porn movie cliche. Next he’ll not have the money to pay for the pizza he ordered.

Shuntaro and Hideki needed a longer story. Their story was very sweet and innocent, especially compared to the others. It’s a very simple story that I really enjoyed.

Narumi and Sakurai… I can see this going badly for Narumi’s future. No one person should be pampered that much. He’s going to need people taking care of him for the rest of his life.

And the last story… sorry but that prince would have just starved. Again another spoiled person though he’s not as sweet as Narumi. When the prince finally gets his head out of his butt, he’s a little more tolerable.

Out of all the stories, the main one was my favorite. I wish Matsumoto-sensei had done something more with Aoyama’s dad. He was too funny.

Manga Review: Living For Tomorrow

Living For Tomorrow by Taishi Zaou

Publisher: DMP/Doki Doki
Price: $12.95
Genre: Drama, Romance, Supernatural, Comedy, Yaoi
Themes: School life
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 1 Volume
ISBN: 978-1-56970-084-6

Note: Picture taken with my iPhone from my manga library.

Basic Premise:
Tasuku Mizouchi is the son of an ageman — a woman who brings good luck to those she’s with. Now everyone thinks he might have inherited his mother’s powers and they want his body to take advantage of the good fortune. But Tasuku only has eyes for his childhood friend Ryouta Oono. Maybe turning Ryouta’s constant bad luck around is just the excuse Tasuku needs to jump start their relationship.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, groping, suggestive positions, invisible penis, pressed bodies

Review:
Tasuku starts the story as a tsundere — an abusive character who turns nice. He’s always abusing Ryouta to hide his true feelings. When the ageman thing comes out, it’s the perfect opportunity to give love a try. You have to love the way Tasuku struggles with the dilemma of liking his childhood friend who happens to be a guy. He thinks the relationship is doomed.

And poor Ryouta is a dense sort of guy who has to have things spelled out in giant neon letters before he figures things out. His heart is always in the right place though. Both he and Tasuku balance each other out and make this a fun and entertaining read.

Zaou-sensei remains one of my favorite manga authors. And this book is definitely on my keeper shelf.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, fondling, pressed bodies sugestive positions, penis allusion, insertion allusion

Review:
I absolutely ADORE Naono-sensei. Love love love love everything I’ve read by her. Her characters are always tortured and caring and tug at the heart strings. But also they are hilariously shy. Three Wolves Mountain is no exception. Any fan of Naono-sensei will love this manga. Anyone who isn’t a fan should read it and thus become hooked on her work.

Susugi and Jiro are too cute. Both when Jiro is younger and when he gets older and the relationship reverses. Naono-sensei is known for her older men being on the receiving end.

Jiro and Tarou’s parents are comedic gold as well. Even Aki is a riot. This manga will forever and always be on my keeper shelf high amongst my re-reads.

What starts off as nice job offer gets complicated when Chihiro starts to have feelings for the good doctor.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, fondling, pressed bodies, invisible penis, suggestive positions

Review:
Akira-sensei penned a lovely story with endearing characters. I love how she spends her author’s notes trying to convince the reader that this is a boy’s love manga not a cat manga. It’s so totally a cat manga with boy’s love tossed in for flavor, but I’m not holding that against it. The story focuses on the characters and how they came to love one another instead of dumping them in bed at first sight.

This is a re-read for me. I love how awkward Kumazawa is and yet he’s so straightforward too. Chihiro is the most dynamic out of all the characters. He grows over the course of the story. That growth is where his love of Kumazawa comes from.

I plan to read more by Akira-sensei. I’m sure I’ll enjoy that too.

THE RUMORED PAIR
Hiroshi Akabane and Seiichi Aoyama are being mistaken for a couple. Then again, it might not be a mistake.

Sex Shown:
Kissing, suggestive positions, pressed bodies, fondling, penis outlines.

Review:
This is a cute, quick read. Of the four couples presented, the couple in MECHANISM OF LOVE has the sweetest story but Sugiura and Ogasawara are my favorites. I would have liked more from THE RUMORED PAIR, but I love the way it teased and then ended. Any BL fan can pretty much guess how the story will go.

There’s not much to say about this manga. It’s straight forward and for entertainment purposes only. No deep thinking involved. Just enjoy the characters as they struggle to come to terms with their relationships. I would say this is an average BL manga.

Matsuda and Suzaki now run a general clinic together but that doesn’t mean all is well with their relationship.

Sex Shown
Kissing, groping, forced pleasure, pressed bodies, suggestive positions

Review
This is not a manga to be approached lightly In fact, if you’re like me, you might have to take it in chunks spread out over a few days. I enjoyed this story but it is rough… for lack of a better word. There’s some cute jokes at the end, but that’s at the end. Until the end, you have to deal with the gritty relationships presented and know that these men will reach happiness only after a hard fought, bloody battle.

I felt sad for Kyou but I also wanted to smack him. To ignore the threats and near violence to his sister, even on her say so, to be with Tatsuki is a little hard to swallow. I don’t think I could be that forgiving. I know family reunions would be more than a little strained.

Hachiko’s story is sad to the point of tears and Suzaki’s plight is no picnic either. The men of this book have some severe emotional baggage that made this story both griping and emotional. Those who like their manga on the rough side with a heavy plot will enjoy this. This is Honma-sensei’s first work and I have read others. I plan to find more.

Things start getting complicated when Hiroki realizes Yasuyuki is more than another conquest.

Sex Shown
Kissing, suggestive positions, pressed bodies

Review
This story was so sweet. Not in a bad way. It was emotional and draws you into the characters without you even realizing. You start off in Hiroki’s POV and you just know he’s up to know good. He’s all about pleasure and which man will give it to him next. He loves the hunt and knows the game like he has cheat codes. You can’t help but feel sorry for Yasuyuki because there’s no way this can end well for him.

But Yasuyuki’s giving and kind nature get past Hiroki’s tough playboy exterior to his heart. That’s when the real drama begins. Hiroki’s struggle to hold onto his old self while embracing the new man he is with Yasuyuki is what made this story so sweet. A definite re-read for the keeper shelf. I will be looking for more of Ueda-sensei’s work.

Review:
I love Makoto Tateno-sensei!!

I have to admit I wanted to smack Tomoe with a sledgehammer when he was first introduced. But then, that’s the reaction Tateno-sensei was going for. Even after the big reveal, I still wanted to smack Tomoe but with a pillow instead of a heavy blunt object. He was an idiot and doesn’t deserve someone as caring as Yoji, but they are such an amazing couple.

The second storyline with Yusuke and Hiroto was equally sweet and cute. Both men are stubborn and there are misunderstandings and they bounced off of each other so well.

This is an enjoyable one-shot that any Tateno-sensei fan will love.
